Tangled Yarns is moving! After almost six years here on Chester Street, we feel the time has come for a change. In January, we will be moving to a new store. We have all felt the increasing pressure on parking, but we have been eager to find just the right home. We are committed to maintaining a bricks-and-mortar presence where our loyal customers can visit to browse and socialise, while continuing to provide a super speedy online service. Our new store is brand new, bright and roomy, with better customer parking both on-site and on-street. It is centrally located and close to public transport (both train and bus). We hope that you will come & visit us to help us say goodbye to the Chester Street store, and of course we’d love to welcome you all to our shiny new store early next year. Our new address will be 13-15 Norman Street, Wooloowin.

Kim will have her choice of beautiful scarves when she feels like throwing on a little something light and pretty this summer! She has just finished two versions of Strathcona, showing its simple lines to advantage in both the natural linen of Pierrot Tours and the dusty pink silk of Julien.
Anita loves to whip up hats when she needs a bit of almost-instant gratification, and her Rhinelander fits the bill perfectly. In steely grey Ultra Alpaca, its combination of texture and cables makes it a great quick stocking stuffer for her husband.
One of our very special friends is expecting a baby in January, so I couldn’t resist picking up my hook to make her a little something for the new bub. It’s always more fun to work in a group, so why not join in our WIP Wednesdays? Come along and work on your own projects or join our class table / session to work on our project of the week. Laura popped in earlier this week to share her finished Fox Paws scarf. Knitted in a fabulous selection of colours of The Fibre Company’s Canopy Fingering, this beautiful scarf is sure to keep her warm when she heads back to Canada soon.
Also heading overseas shortly, Maureen will be warding off Europe’s winter chill in style in her Button Tab Hat and Comfort Cowl. Maureen has used Noro Silk Garden and Berocco Ultra Alpaca in this great coordinating set. One of our Tech Support students, Stacey, has just finished her first pair of socks! It’s perhaps a little warm for them at the moment, but her Prototypes will keep her feet toasty next winter.
Derrin has had her hooks out again, finishing a gorgeously autumnal Queen Anne’s Shawl. This shawl takes on a completely different personality when crocheted in Noro Taiyo Sock. I had a little surprise waiting for me when I came in this morning. Robin had left us her beautiful Dulcet. Whisper soft in our Cascade Forest Hills, it’s a perfect cover-up for cool summer evenings … not that we’ve had many of those lately!
I think we may be staging a little intervention for Anita soon – this is her second Dory in as many weeks! This time she has used a single colour of Cascade Ultra Pima for a very different look and feel.

The Lizard Ridge Afghan has been Caroline’s travelling companion – each square makes a great portable project – and the finished result is spectacular, showcasing the multiple colourways of Noro Kureyon in undulating waves. With overseas trips in their futures, both Maureen and Rachel have been working on fabulous hats. Rachel has finished two hats in Jo Sharp Silkroad DK Tweed – pretty lavender and simple lace in the adorable Slouched Tuva Hat…
… and varying widths of ice blue and grey stripes playing together beautifully in Bella’s Hat from Eclipse.
Both of Maureen’s beauties are in our Berocco Ultra Alpaca – a classically elegant Windschief in pale grey…
… and a delightful mix of colours and simple stranding in Fox Point.

This last week has been hot, the sort of hot we don’t usually see until much later in the season, prompting us to begin working on light summery tops and barely-there scarves in cool linen and cotton. Our shop models have had their wardrobes updated too, now sporting breezy cotton cardis and shrugs over their summer finery. Marigold, my lacy crocheted cardigan, has won a few new admirers who’ve begun one of their own.
I’ve even been inspired to pick up the linen version I began last year…
We’ve also been working on some quick and easy Christmas gift inspiration.
My girls love to bring me flowers they’ve picked and how better to show them off than in a sweet little vase covered in lacy crochet.

Marianne dropped in yesterday with her gorgeous Midori in Noro Kibou. The bias construction really makes the most of Kibou’s slowly shifting colours, creating a striking top for cool summer evenings.
Now she just has to whip up a second for big sister before popping them both in the mail! Babies are everywhere this week! Hot off Derrin’s hook for a friend’s baby is her crocheted chevron blanket in a rainbow of colours of Cascade Ultra Pima.
Derrin has also just finished a test knit for Australian designer Deanne Ramsay. Formerly Queensland-based, Deanne’s lightweight crocheted designs always strike a chord with us.
Featuring a combination of yarns with long colour changes – Zauberball Lace and Taiyo Lace – Montville‘s asymmetrical shape and simple lace edge allow the yarn to take centre stage.

Today we are launching our final class calendar for the year! We have our last Learn to Knit & Learn to Crochet courses before we move into some fun festive-themed workshops to finish off the year. Our regular Tech Support Sessions will continue until just prior holiday break. Learn To Knit Learn To Crochet If you already know how to knit but would like to experience the Continental method, we have also scheduled a final Continental Crash Course in November. Continental Crash Course Our final technique-based workshops for 2014 are sure to be popular. We tease Anita sometimes about her passion for beige, but look at how beautifully these three neutral shades of Cascade Ultra Pima work in her Vera. This is a great little top for spring, and would be lovely over linen pants or flowing skirts.
Arleen has been crocheting up a storm! She brought in a colourful selection of Rist Canyon Shawls in a selection of yarns and hues, including The Fibre Company’s Canopy Fingering and Pierrot’s Pont du Gard linen. Hot off Robin’s needles is this super cute Griffin by Georgie Hallam in some of our colourful Noro Taiyo.
I couldn’t resist casting on a teeny shop sample in our new Indiecita 4-ply baby alpaca. The result was this sweet Eole, the soft ecru yarn livened up by a selection of colourful buttons. |

We’re very excited this week to be launching Indiecita, our new line of super soft 4-ply baby alpaca.
Baby alpaca is the most luxurious and lightweight of all alpaca yarns and is known for its warmth, softness and drape. It is ideal for baby knits, and for adult garments and accessories. The term “baby alpaca” refers to the fineness of the fibre rather than the age of the animal. It comes from the first shearing of the alpaca, and is the softest grade of alpaca yarn. Spun in Peru, Indiecita comes in a range of 18 stunning colours. To begin with, we have 14 in stock, but the remaining colours are on their way.

It’s been a bumper week for finishing, with lots of our lovely customers popping in to show us what they’ve made. One of our regular Tech Support students, Stacey had two great projects to share with us at class this week. First up, a great quick knit (ideal for the gift giving season) – Present by Mademoiselle C in Jo Sharp Aran Tweed. And for a stunning splash of colour all year round, the Lace Ribbon Scarf by Veronik Avery in Fibre Company Canopy Fingering.
Our prolific friend Rachel has had her needles flying again! She dropped in yesterday with a bundle of finished projects. Line Break certainly seems to be a popular project, with several of them popping up in store this month. Rachel has used our Fibre Company Canopy Fingering to create a light and airy wrap, perfect for taking the chill off summer’s air-conditioned interiors.
A special knit for her teenage son, Los Muertos by Erssie Major in Berroco Ultra Alpaca.
And finally, another hat to keep her noggin toasty and warm – Alize Hat by Elena Nodel in some stash yarn.
Are there any statisticians out there? I’d be interested to know what the chances are of two customers bringing in finished projects in the same colourway of the same yarn on the same week. Sue has recently finished Crossroads Pullover by Helene Rush in Noro Shiro.
Last of all, I have a special finished project to add to the pile – my school holiday knit for my eldest miss. She requested her very own Carousel by Georgie Hallam in a lovely icy blue shade of Cascade Ultra Pima Fine. |

Did you survive the school holidays? With only a couple of days before the little people head back to the classroom, now might be a good time to take a moment for yourself with the beverage of your choice and a good magazine. It’s also at this time of year that I start to think about Christmas – there are only 82 days until the chubby one slides down the chimney, so it’s not too early to start planning for Christmas gifts. Three of our most popular workshops are back on the calendar in October. Spots for these are filling fast, so get in quick if they’re something you’ve been wanting to try. Continental Crash Course In Continental Knitting, you tension the yarn in your left hand, using smaller movements to make the stitches. Some people find that, with practice, this speeds up their knitting greatly, especially during long stretches of stocking stitch or ribbing.
This course is aimed at students who are already comfortable with the “English Style” of knitting ie with yarn held in the right hand. Prior knowledge of knitting and purling, increasing and decreasing is required. During the class, Anita will teach you one way of forming the knit stitch and two different ways of making the purl stitch. She will also show you how to switch between the two in ribbing, and how to do the most common increases and decreases.

Crochet Market Bag Just in time for lazy summer days at the beach, Derrin is back with her Crochet Market Bag workshop.
Use our lovely cotton yarns to create a funky carry-all, perfect for throwing beach towel, book and sunnies in during the summer months. It’s also a great quick Christmas gift, particularly filled with a selection of goodies. This workshop is suitable for intermediate crocheters. Sunday 12th October 11am-2pm $45.00 Introduction to Entrelac Derrin’s spectacular entrelac throw always catches our customers’ eyes. And who can blame them – it is a real work of art!
Entrelac is a technique which enables you to create interconnected squares without seaming. Combined with the long colour changes of our Noro yarns, you too can create a masterpiece of texture and colour. Introduction to Entrelac is suitable for intermediate knitters. Derrin has combined three colours of our Heritage Silk and Heritage Sock to wonderful effect in her Auri, highlighting the shifts from warm neutrals to soft blues and lavenders.
Who’d have thought we’d be gushing over the cute factor of a fungus? But when it’s knitted out of Noro and adorning a teapot, how can we refrain?
Liz has finished this glorious Wood Fungus in Noro Silk Garden and Cascade 220 Superwash Worsted. Also hot off Liz’s needles this week is a spectacular Line Break in a rich tangerine shade of our Ella Rae Lace Merino. (We can’t seem to keep Ella Rae on our shelves! It flys out of the shop as soon as it arrives…good thing there will be more very soon.) Liz knitted an extra short row section and widened the mesh edging, resulting in a generously sized wrap.

| With the weather really starting to warm up and even our first summer storm this week, my projects have naturally segued into cotton and there is more on my crochet hook than my needles.
There is something about the warmer weather that makes me want to pick up our silky soft Cascade Ultra Pima. This is a sweet little cotton top requested by the elder of my little ones; the pressure is on to finish it quickly so she can wear it over the holidays.

We’re halfway through September already – is it just me, or is spring just flying by? I know lots of you are working on your cardis and tops for our Spring Knit- and Crochet-along. Here at Tangled Yarns, we have had trouble deciding what to cast on – could it be because we still have one or two unfinished summerweight projects leftover from last year? But they count too, don’t they?

Andrea has been busy working on this stunning crochet ripple blanket as a gift for her parents. The colours of our Cascade 220 Superwash Worsted have worked so well together.
I actually started my Colour Block Cardigan by Chiaki Hayashi in our Pierrot Pont Du Gard last October, along with one of our lovely customers, Roslyn. She whipped hers up in next to no time, whereas I was terribly sidetracked. The warmer weather enticed me to pick it up again and I am thrilled to be wearing it today!
