Granny Square

The humble granny square is such a versitle piece of crochet – you can make many tiny granny squares, or one big one, or a combination of all. It is a unisex pattern, and has a great rhythm to it.

Please keep in mind, this tutorial is using UK/Australian terminology.

Start by looping your yarn around your thumb, with the short tail towards you.You will be working into this ring to create the centre cluster of stitches.

Insert your crochet hook into the ring formed around your thumb and pull a chain through.

Chain three (counts as your first treble)

Make two trebles crochet into the ring (you can the ring off your thumb now, supporting the ring with your thumb and fourth finger. This creates your first treble cluster. A treble cluster is a set of three trebles (or, for the first treble cluster of a round, a three chain and two treble crochet).

Chain two (this will be your corner of your square). * Treble cluster into ring, chain two. Repeat from astrix a total of three times. You should have four sets of treble clusters

Join the round by chaining into the top of the chain three you made at the beginning of this round.

To start the next round, we need to move our working yarn over to the chain two we created to make our corner space. Slip stitch into the two of the next two treble crochet and then slip stitch into the corner space made by the chain two of the previous round.

Chain three (counts as first treble crochet), two treble crochet into corner space.

Chain two, treble cluster into corner space. This creates the first corner of the round.

* Chain one, treble cluster into corner space, chain two, treble cluster into corner space. Repeat from astrix a total of three times. You should have eight sets of treble clusters, two in each corner space.Slip stitch into top of chain three, to end round.

For next round and all subsequent rounds, slip stitch into next two treble crochet, slip stitch into corner space. Chain three (counts as first treble crochet), two treble crochet into corner space. Chain two, treble cluster into corner space. [ Chain one * treble cluster into space, chain one. Repeat from astrix along side until you get to the next corner space. Treble cluster into corner space, two chain, treble cluster into corner space.] Repeat square brackets a total of three times times. Chain one * treble cluster into space, chain one. Repeate from astrix along side until you reach start of round. Slip stitch into top of chain three to end round.

Make as big or as little as you need. When you reach your completed size, cut the yarn and pull yarn through the last slip stitch. Weave in ends.
