Knitting Traditions
tangledYARNS

We’ve received a shipment of the Fall edition of Knitting Traditions!

tangledYARNS

From the editor…

This seventh edition of PieceWork’sKnitting Traditions is all about lace–its magic and mystery and its ethereal quality–as expressed in knitting.

The word ‘lace’ comes from the Latin verb laqueare, ‘to ensnare.’ Many believe that lace originated with efforts to reproduce the web made by nature’s consummate lacemaker, the spider. The openwork fabric that would come to be known as lace originated in the sixteenth century, and the lace industry quickly became a force to be reckoned with. Lace made and broke national economies. Women and men died trying to possess the finest examples. Smugglers devised creative (and some ghoulish) ways to avoid paying taxes and duties on it. Numerous governments established laws that restricted who could wear it.

Each piece of lace speaks so eloquently to the beauty and value of work done by someone’s hand, whether that of an unknown maker of the past or one of today’s practitioners of lace knitting. And the lacemakers’ stories are just as intriguing as their lace.

In these pages, you’ll find stunning stoles, scarves, and shawls, an entire section with lace patterns from Victorian England, and lacy edgings, doilies, socks, and more. In addition to new patterns designed for this edition, our archives yielded a selection of older lace patterns that are no longer widely available.

Although knitting lace came along a little later than lace in its earliest forms–bobbin and needle–its fascinating history is still centuries old, and its traditions grow stronger with the addition of each new lace knitter to the fold. Please enjoy Knitting Traditions’ look at lace!” –Jeane Hutchins, editor

Whats on the Needles at Tangled Yarns

Kimley has been dipping her toes into felting this week, and has produced
a fabulous vintage cloche by Erica Jackofsky.

Ragtime Annie Cloche in our Cascade 220 Worsted.

tangledYARNS

Claudia has used up a special skein of my hand dyed yarn from her stash and made a super pretty
Hitchhiker.

tangledYARNS

Kim has been working through some of her stash in the past few weeks, and has finished two lovely projects using Malabrigo Sock.

Vintage Bouquet in Malabrigo Sock and Tosh Merino Light

tangledYARNS

Fulmar in Malabrigo Sock and Fibre Company Meadow

tangledYARNS

Anita has made some very handsome socks for her husband this week in Cascade 220 SuperwashThuja by Bobby Ziegler.

tangledYARNS

Derrin has finally hopped on the Hitchhiker bandwagon, with a twist!

Instead of using a fingering weight, Derrin chose to use Noro Silk Garden and Cascade Eco Alpaca for a more substantial look in a cooler climate.

tangledYARNS
tangledYARNS

Derrin has also finished her
Mapleton by Deanne Ramsay this week. She used Noro Silk Garden Sock and used a 5mm crochet hook for a nice, drapey feel to the shawl.

This would also look lovely in our Noro Taiyo Sock!

tangledYARNS
tangledYARNS

Lauren has been working on a few more baby things for her upcoming arrival!

tangledYARNS

First up is Rainbow Dress by Georgie Hallam in Biggan Design DK Merino
– it is such a classic piece for a little girl!

Next, Lauren has made a little cardigan in bright Poppy Red Cascade Ultra Pima
Autumn Leaves by Nikki Van De Car.

Whats on the Needles at Tangled Yarns

It is always fun to ‘Knit – A – Long’ with a friend and the lovely Sue and Terri have been working away on a Mystery Shawl KAL.

This is Terri’s finished Germinate by Kirsten Kapur.

Terri has used our Malabrigo Sock in Playa, Turner and Lettuce.

tangledYARNS

tangledYARNS

Sue chose to go with a slightly heavier weight and used our Malabrigo Arroyo in English Rose, Aguas and Purpuras.

tangledYARNS

tangledYARNS

Anita had a much loved skein of Malabrigo Sock in Light Of Love in her stash. Her little Miss A discovered it and it was love at first sight!

A single skein wasn’t enough for something so the solution was of course…stripes! Miss A was asked what other colour she would like and she chose this adorable yellow Cascade Heritage Silk.

The pattern is Gathering Stipes by Veera Valimaki, finished off perfectly with three of our sweet little buttons.

tangledYARNS

Derrin has whipped up a couple of my Little Set of Stripes hats this week using a combination of our Debbie Bliss Baby Cashmerino and Cascade 220 Superwash Sport…too sweet!

My Miss J’s school fete is on later this month and each year I like to donate some kits to the craft stall.

For this years kits I have designed a squishy little garter stitch cowl for the budding knitter.

Petite Garter Cowl is a great first project to knit with your eager new knitter or simply for you to whip up to keep your little people warm.

Designed to fit a range of ages from approximately 4yrs old to 8yrs and is easily modified to make it larger for the teens or young adults.

With the cold and dreary days we have had of late, our lounges have been full of knitters & crocheters that have wanted a change of scenery. What better way to brighten up your day than to spend a little part of it surrounded by the colour in store.

The delicious treats we have to accompany a hot tea or coffee certainly help too….

Whats on the Needles at Tangled Yarns

Rachel’s needles are certainly flying at the moment!

She popped in this week to share two lovely finished projects.

The pattern is Edgewood by Leah McGlone and Rachel has used our Fibre Company Organik.

As she was after a slightly smaller finished scarf / shawlette, Rachel has used only three spectacular Organik colours per shawlette.

These little shawlettes are so squishy and just right for layering at this time of year, I might just have to make a few for my wardrobe.

tangledYARNS

tangledYARNS

Simone has been busy knitting for her lovely brother. This is a Many Scarf by Jennie in our Berroco Ultra Alpaca.

For a little extra width Simone has cast on 41 stitches.

tangledYARNS

This week Derrin has used some of our ultra squishy Cascade Eco Alpaca and whipped up the beautiful Willow by Lisa Gutierrez. I simply adore this and can see it gracing the centre of a table.

tangledYARNS

tangledYARNS
Also off Derrins needles this week is a Torrent by Lisa Mutch in our Fibre Company Canopy.

The Canopy is insanely soft and squishy, especially in garter stitch.

tangledYARNS

Knitscene Fall 2013 is here with 21 knitting patterns that are perfect for our mid season knitting.

tangledYARNS

Missoni-inspired chevron stripes take centre stage and Mercedes Tarasovich-Clark deconstructs basic chevron shaping techniques, while the “wrong side” of knitting gets its day in the sun with four cardigan and sweater patterns featuring reverse stockinette stitch.

Meet Cassie Castillo, a knitter who is living the dream, and knit one of her four designer collection patterns.

Plus, four knitting patterns that create the look of cables without the bother of a cable needle, and so much more.

Last and certainly not least is this simply beautiful Colour Me Pretty Hat by Elena Nodel. Rachel has used a few stash yarns plus the super sweet Peach colour of Cascade 220 Superwash Worsted.

tangledYARNS

A very special gift for Rachel’s sister….a Swallow Cowl by Hannah Fettig in our Fibre Company Canopy. I love these two colours together!
tangledYARNS

My mum was after an easy to wear, neutral cowl to pop on as an extra layer of warmth. I loved knitting my first Downton Cowl by Shannon Cook back in April.

This time I opted for our Fibre Company Road to China Light as I was after a slightly smaller version.

I have used a 4mm needles and reduced the width by one lace repeat.

tangledYARNS

Hope it keeps my mum warm and toasty…

Inspiring your passion
