Knitting Traditions |
|
We’ve received a shipment of the Fall edition of Knitting Traditions!
“This seventh edition of PieceWork’sKnitting Traditions is all about lace–its magic and mystery and its ethereal quality–as expressed in knitting. The word ‘lace’ comes from the Latin verb laqueare, ‘to ensnare.’ Many believe that lace originated with efforts to reproduce the web made by nature’s consummate lacemaker, the spider. The openwork fabric that would come to be known as lace originated in the sixteenth century, and the lace industry quickly became a force to be reckoned with. Lace made and broke national economies. Women and men died trying to possess the finest examples. Smugglers devised creative (and some ghoulish) ways to avoid paying taxes and duties on it. Numerous governments established laws that restricted who could wear it. Each piece of lace speaks so eloquently to the beauty and value of work done by someone’s hand, whether that of an unknown maker of the past or one of today’s practitioners of lace knitting. And the lacemakers’ stories are just as intriguing as their lace. In these pages, you’ll find stunning stoles, scarves, and shawls, an entire section with lace patterns from Victorian England, and lacy edgings, doilies, socks, and more. In addition to new patterns designed for this edition, our archives yielded a selection of older lace patterns that are no longer widely available. Although knitting lace came along a little later than lace in its earliest forms–bobbin and needle–its fascinating history is still centuries old, and its traditions grow stronger with the addition of each new lace knitter to the fold. Please enjoy Knitting Traditions’ look at lace!” –Jeane Hutchins, editor

Whats on the Needles at Tangled Yarns
Kimley has been dipping her toes into felting this week, and has produced Ragtime Annie Cloche in our Cascade 220 Worsted.
Vintage Bouquet in Malabrigo Sock and Tosh Merino Light Fulmar in Malabrigo Sock and Fibre Company Meadow Anita has made some very handsome socks for her husband this week in Cascade 220 Superwash – Thuja by Bobby Ziegler. Derrin has finally hopped on the Hitchhiker bandwagon, with a twist! Instead of using a fingering weight, Derrin chose to use Noro Silk Garden and Cascade Eco Alpaca for a more substantial look in a cooler climate.
This would also look lovely in our Noro Taiyo Sock! Lauren has been working on a few more baby things for her upcoming arrival! First up is Rainbow Dress by Georgie Hallam in Biggan Design DK Merino Autumn Leaves by Nikki Van De Car.
And a little bit of decoration for the baby’s room, with some left overUltra Pima… This will look fantastic strung up over the window and they were so quick and easy to make.

Whats on the Needles at Tangled Yarns
This is Terri’s finished Germinate by Kirsten Kapur. Terri has used our Malabrigo Sock in Playa, Turner and Lettuce. Sue chose to go with a slightly heavier weight and used our Malabrigo Arroyo in English Rose, Aguas and Purpuras. A single skein wasn’t enough for something so the solution was of course…stripes! Miss A was asked what other colour she would like and she chose this adorable yellow Cascade Heritage Silk. The pattern is Gathering Stipes by Veera Valimaki, finished off perfectly with three of our sweet little buttons.
Soooooo soft and squishy. Edgewood by Leah McGlone in our Fibre Company Organik – Deed Sea, Cumulus, Atoll, Lichen. My only issue now is that I want one in several different colour combinations!
For this years kits I have designed a squishy little garter stitch cowl for the budding knitter.
Designed to fit a range of ages from approximately 4yrs old to 8yrs and is easily modified to make it larger for the teens or young adults. The pattern is now available on Ravelry or you can pick up your copy in store with a ball of Cascade 220 Superwash Worsted.

12.07.13
It is hard to believe that it is already the middle of July! I have no idea where the month, not to mention the year has gone…. There has been another flurry of colour & fibre through the shop this week, lots of lovely deliveries arriving and projects being cast on left, right and centre. We get such joy from sharing our ideas with you each & every week, through the newsletter and in store. Our classes have been at maximum capacity & many of our courses are already booked out until the end of August! Today we are releasing our new class calendar that will take us right up until the end of October. We will continue to try to squeeze in as many classes as we can, especially for those classes you have requested of us. With the cold and dreary days we have had of late, our lounges have been full of knitters & crocheters that have wanted a change of scenery. What better way to brighten up your day than to spend a little part of it surrounded by the colour in store. The delicious treats we have to accompany a hot tea or coffee certainly help too…. |

Whats on the Needles at Tangled Yarns
Rachel’s needles are certainly flying at the moment! She popped in this week to share two lovely finished projects. The pattern is Edgewood by Leah McGlone and Rachel has used our Fibre Company Organik. As she was after a slightly smaller finished scarf / shawlette, Rachel has used only three spectacular Organik colours per shawlette. These little shawlettes are so squishy and just right for layering at this time of year, I might just have to make a few for my wardrobe. Simone has been busy knitting for her lovely brother. This is a Many Scarf by Jennie in our Berroco Ultra Alpaca. For a little extra width Simone has cast on 41 stitches. This week Derrin has used some of our ultra squishy Cascade Eco Alpaca and whipped up the beautiful Willow by Lisa Gutierrez. I simply adore this and can see it gracing the centre of a table.
The Canopy is insanely soft and squishy, especially in garter stitch. |

Whats on the Needles at Tangled Yarns
Liz has used our Noro Taiyo Sock, this time in colour #045 As a gift for her sister – Rill Scarf by Miriam L Felton in our Malabrigo Silkpaca. I can’t wait till our next shipment of this yarn arrives! Rachel has been getting a little bit hat happy this week and has whipped up more hats for her family! Henley Button Hat by Kristy Childress in two gorgeous colours of our Debbie Bliss Cashmerino Aran will keep Rachel’s niece nice and warm. I love the square buttons with the stripes.
The third hat off the needles was a quick Turn A Square by Jared Flood in our Cascade 220 Superwash Worsted.
My mum was after an easy to wear, neutral cowl to pop on as an extra layer of warmth. I loved knitting my first Downton Cowl by Shannon Cook back in April. This time I opted for our Fibre Company Road to China Light as I was after a slightly smaller version. I have used a 4mm needles and reduced the width by one lace repeat. |
