The heavens have opened over South East Queensland and Northern New South Wales this week, which has made for a very busy week for us! Our Tuesday afternoon Technical Support class was bursting at the seams so I picked up the crochet hook and assisted. A great way to spend a raining Tuesday afternoon. Our Wednesday social knitting group was a wonderful mix of knitters taking some time out after sending their children back to school.

A new delivery of our all time favourite knitting bags and accessories from Namaste has arrived this week. Classes
Our new year classes are filling fast with many of the sessions already fully booked! We love to see so many people embracing knitting & crochet and we are delighted to be passing on our passion. Three upcoming classes starting in early February - Continental Knitting Our Continental Knitting classes are aimed at students who already know how to knit english (i.e. with yarn held in the right hand) and want to learn how to knit Continental Style (with yarn in left hand). Some people find that with practice, this speeds up their knitting time greatly – especially during long stretches of stockinette stitch or ribbing. Prior knowledge of how to knit and purl, increase and decrease comfortably is required. During the class, you will learn one method of knit stitch, two different methods of purl stitch and how to switch between the two during ribbing. This is a series of two classes run over two consecutive weeks. Saturday 10am – 12noon 4^th February & 11^th February $50 per person (2 week course) plus supplies Knitting in the Round Many patterns are designed to be knit in the round, which is a simple technique that can be used for accessories, garments and even shawls! We suggest a small project to get you used to the technique – We can supply you with two patterns or if you have a simple hat pattern that is knitted in the round, you are welcome to bring that a long too. Fetching by Cheryl Niamath is a pair of simple fingerless gloves with a basic cable detail. This takes just one ball of Debbie Bliss Cashmerino Aran (or something of a similar weight), 4mm double pointed needles, split ring marker, cable needle, darning needle and a piece of smooth waste yarn in a contrasting colour (approx 30cm long). Derrin’s Basic Hot Water Bottle cover will keep your hot water bottle toasty warm in the cooler months and would make a great gift too! This uses 150-200 metres of aran or bulky weight yarn and 6mm 40cm circulars OR 2 x 60cm circulars OR double pointed needles. You will also need a stitch marker OR split ring marker (depending on knitting method) and a darning needle. *Saturday 1pm – 3pm* 11^th February & 18^th February *$50.00 per person (2 week course) plus supplies* Learn to Crochet One of our most popular classes is our Learn to Crochet class. This is a beginners class, which will introduce all the basics of crochet – how to chain, double crochet, treble crochet, finish off, increase, decrease and reading a simple pattern. Ripppppppp! It is now becoming Aidez by Cirilia Rose. I have been reasonably monogamous to one project this week….unusual for me but it is amazing what having a deadline can do! I have cast on last Friday evening for an adult version of the adorable Jane by Georgie Hallam – Miss Jane. I cast off yesterday and am yet to block the finished cardi – I figured there was no way it would dry in this rain and it is the ideal weight over a summer dress today. Keep an eye out for details of the patterns release, I already have plans for another one for my winter wardrobe this winter!

With the summer crochet season in full swing our Clover Soft Touch Crochet hooks have been the pick of the bunch. New stock of all sizes has just arrived! We also have replenished the full range of Clover accessories including stitch markers and darning needles.
Classes
The urge to learn something new is strong! Most of our January and February classes have filled already but we do have some spots left a couple of great classes. Learn to Crochet If your goal for 2012 is to create your own stunning crochet throw this is your class! During our Learn to Crochet course you will learn how to chain, double crochet, treble crochet, increase, decrease and read simple patterns. Thursday 6pm – 8pm 2^nd February, 9^th February & 16^th February $75.00 per person (3 week course) plus supplies In the Round Knitting seamlessly in the round is essential for this seasons hottest knitwear items – hats, cowls and of course socks! During our Knitting In the Round course you will learn how to effortlessly join to knit in the round. We also touch on the various different methods of knitting in the round, circular needles, magic loop and double point needles. Saturday 1pm – 3pm 11^th February & 18^th February $50.00 per person (2 week course) plus supplies Toe Up Socks Keep your toes toasty with our Toe Up Socks class. During our Toe Up Socks course you will learn how to knit a pair of ribbed socks, from the toe up! The benefit of this method is that if you are knitting larger sized socks or have ‘just enough’ yarn you can knit the leg length your yarn allows. No running out of yarn half way through your toe! On the Needles at Tangled Yarns
Hot off the needles! Anita finished her Autumn Vines by Alana Dakos in record time – must be something about knitting with our divine Madelinetosh Pashmina. Such a perfect pattern & yarn match…I may need to make one myself. Derrin has whipped up a Summer Flies Mini Shawl Sampler by Donna Griffin in preparation for our Learn to Lace class next weekend. This class is fully booked now but we will add further classes to our future class schedule. After enjoying the Striped Study that she knit last year Lauren has been eager to cast on the sister pattern Different Lines by Veera Valimaki. Both of these yarns (Malabrigo Sock in Solis and Candombe) have been different projects that weren’t quite right but they are perfect being striped together. Lauren is itching to cast on Cria by Ysolda Teague (from Little Red in the City) in our Malabrigo Arroyo so there has been lots of swatching on the needles. She will be ready to cast on for the cooler weather! Some old outstanding WIP’s off the needles for me this week. I started a pair of Fetching mitts by Cheryl Niamath early last year for my Grandmother….as many of you know sadly she passed away before I managed to finish them. They have been sitting in my basket at home, waiting for me to be able to make a decision about finishing them. Over the holidays I re-visited all of my projects and decided that I was ready to finish them and that they would be perfect as a special gift for my mums birthday this week. I hope that they hold many special memories for my mum. Mums other Birthday project – my Claudia Scarf was finished with 2 grams of yarn to spare. The Pierrot Yarns Beauty Cotton Silk blocked up beautifully after a gentle wash with SOAK. On a run with finishing I decided my next target would be my Summer Waves Cardi by Vera Sanon. This is my forth finished cardigan in our Cascade Ultra Pima this summer, oh – plus the two little Jane Cardi’s for my girls. Obviously my yarn of choice for this time of year….I have cast on another. This is a test knit for the wonderful Georgie Hallam – keep a look out for the pattern release soon!

It has been a busy week in store with many people escaping the heat and enjoying a spot of shopping and social knitting. We are in the final weeks of the school holidays in Queensland and it has been wonderful to see so many young knitters picking up supplies. My girls have both enjoyed their time helping out in the shop this week. Miss 3 LOVES to help unpack orders…especially those that include bubble wrap! Always creative, my eldest found a new use for her Twirly Skirt…..a poncho! (she was complaining that the air-con was too cold). She has been making progress with her knitting, even with the occasional dropped stitch.
Keeping it Simple KAL/CAL
Last week we launched our simple summer scarves KAL / CAL! I am only inches away from finishing my first summer scarf for the season – Claudia Scarf by Rebecca Jackson in our Pierrot Yarns Beauty Cotton Silk. I can’t wait to block this one, the lace will open up wonderfully to create a light breezy fabric. I had also cast on a Horai Scarf by Hiroko Fukatsu in the buttery Malabrigo Lace but the heat and humidity has gotten the best of me…it will be hibernated until it cools down a touch. Instead I cast on with a single skein of silver Pierrot Yarns Soft Silk Ramie and tested a couple of our other pattern suggestions. It took several attempts before I found just the right pattern / yarn combination, especially since I needed something mindless and easy to knit. Objects in Space by Liz Abinante is the pattern that won me over with its ’round and round’ stocking stitch. I am also keen to see how it all works when you drop the fringe stitches…..and cut them! Coastal Knits
Arriving just in time for some summer reading; a new shipment of Coastal Knits! This beautiful knitting book takes you on a journey of two knitters – Hannah Fettig on the East Coast and Alana Dakos on the West Coast of the United States and showcases knitwear inspired by their part of the world. Our personal favourites are… Cambrian Cowl We used our Cascade Eco Alpaca held double to create a light and squishy cowl. Our shop sample also features two of our lightweight coconut buttons. Another on the fav’s list is the sweet Wildflower Cardigan in our madelinetosh pashmina. The Panoramic Stole would be a perfect Summer Scarf in our Pierrot Soft Silk Ramie! Several customers who grabbed a copy of the book from our last shipment have already made the Sand and Sea Shawlette in a combination of our Malabrigo Lace and Noro Sock. Ideal to add a burst of colour to your wardrobe and for wearing over summer dresses on cooler evenings.
Buttons
New stock from several of our button suppliers! These new white buttons with pink flowers are a sweet new addition to our range, along with replenishment of some of our favourites.
2012 Stock
We have had many eager knitters and crocheters asking about new shipments of our yarns. As some of you would know many designer yarn brands release new colours collections each year – Noro and Debbie Bliss in particular. The new 2012 collections are expected to reach Australia by February and we are as keen as you to check out the new colours! The majority of our other suppliers have had a much needed break over the holiday season and are only just back in action now. We have orders from most suppliers in transit so the shop (and newsletter!) will be bursting with colour over the next couple of weeks. We have new yarns, new colours and plenty of new ideas to share with you! Classes
With the school holidays coming to an end and life returning to relative normality our classes have been filling fast! In particular our new Cast On / Cast Off Techniques has proved to be popular. During this two hour class you will discover a vast number of different cast on & cast methods and the benefits of each of them. Methods may include – Long Tail Cast On, Cable Cast On, Backwards Loop Cast On, Provisional Cast On, Suspended Bind Off, Three Needle Bind Off and many more! Cast on/ Cast off Techniques Thursday 6-8pm 19^th January $25.00 per person Please bring 4mm knitting needles, 4mm crochet hook and a smooth yarn as you will be using this yarn for the different techniques. During February we are adding a mixture of new classes to our standard“Learn To“ lineup. Learn to Lace is a two lesson series which will find you creating a sample piece of lace in the first lesson, forming the foundation of the different stitches used in lace knitting. The second lesson will focus on any problems you’ve had over the week with your homework, and beginning your first shawl. Learn to Lace Sunday 12-2pm 5^th & 12^th February $60.00 Lace can be throughly rewarding to knit! I have cast on a little lace myself this week…. Roslyn dropped in to share a finshed Garter Yoke Baby Cardi by Jennifer Hoel in our Cascade Ultra Pima (wine), finished off perfectly with our cute little doggy bone buttons. Also off the needles for Roslyn is a gorgeous summer tank in our Pierrot Yarns Soft Silk Ramie. This is from a personal pattern book but I can see Madeira by Galia Lael or Insouciant by Julie Hoover working with the Silk Ramie. Kim has decided that 2012 is going to be her year of cardigans and is starting off the year with a bang! She has cast on Vanadium by Lisa Mutch in our Madelinetosh Pashmina (Graphite) Her next cardigan is already waiting in the wings ready to be cast on is Audrey in Unst by Gudrun Johnston in our Madelinetosh Pashmina (Posy). Lauren has finished a bit more gift knitting this week – she has made a sweet little hat and cowl set as a small gift for one of her cousins before she goes to Canada! Some cute bobble and cable love with Orchids & Fairy Lights by Tiny Owl Knits and a Shawl Collared Cowl by Alana Dakos to keep her neck warm. Both are knit in Malabrigo Worsted Merino in the stunning Ravelry Red colourway – how beautiful would that look against the stark white snow in Canada? Anita may be just slightly addicted to knitting with our Madelinetosh Pashmina…she has a second Pashmina project on the needles this week. Autumn Vines Beret by Alana Dakos in Cherry. This will be a seriously divine Autumn hat! Although I have been trying to finish off projects already on the needles a few new things have jumped on the needles this week. With the hot weather we have been swimming a lot lately and trying to juggle everything needed for two small people can be a tricky act. To simplify things I have decided to make myself a sweet little wrap to wear over my swimmers. Using our Cascade Ultra Pima (black) I have cast on Half Pi Wrap by Andrea Rangel. This is a great pattern for me as I enjoy the concept of shawls but don’t tend to wear them often…this is the best of both worlds and the lace is a nice bit of exercise for my brain! (This would be a great first project after completing our Learn to Lace Classes) Like many of you that have ordered online or popped into the store to pick up some of our Brown Sheep Cotton Fine, I was totally smitten with the amazing baby blankets that featured in our newsletter last week. Louise has done such a wonderful job combining the colours of Cotton Fine and the finished blankets are so light and airy. I have a cousin that is expecting a little girl to join their family later this month or early February. An African Flower Blanket is just what every new little girl needs… I am using a selection of seven summery colours and have a production line going to make sure I finish this in time. Aiming for a 1 metre x 1 metre throw I will need 100 flowers so I have started by doing all of the teeny, tiny little centres (they are the most fiddly and time consuming). Next up is the rest of the flower rounds and when they are all finished I will lay them all out to work out the colour placement before edging them all in two rounds of white. I will also make some ‘half flowers’ to even up the straight edges.
New Trading Hours
**From Sunday 8^th January, our Sunday trading hours changed slightly.** We are now open from 11am until 3pm. This gives you time to have a relaxed Sunday breakfast and still leaves you plenty of time to pick up your yarn supplies on the way home! WIP Wednesday 11.01.12

I think if I wasn’t working today, I’d still be here….escaping the horrible heat in the cool aircon in the shop.

Obviously I’m not the only one thinking that was as we have had heaps of wonderful customers popping in for some relief and some social knitting.

I’ve been trying to be good and work on my current works in progress although the lure of new yarns coming and new patterns is hard to resist.

The inches and inches of straight stocking stitch on my Summer Waves have been the ideal project, easy mindless knitting and cool cool ultra pima cotton.

Now…if I could just concentrate on finishing it and not starting something new I could have a finished cardi by the end of the week!

Keeping it Simple KAL/CAL
What is it about January?! It brings a fresh start to everything, a new year and in many cases new projects! It seems to be an annual struggle that I have – a keen desire to suddenly finish all of my current projects so that I can start lots of new ones guilt-free… I spent some of my time off reacquainting myself with the works in progress I’ve accumulated over the past twelve months. I made some hard decisions and some things were ripped but I mostly decided to continue working on them. One project I am enjoying working on in the warmer weather is a simple scarf – something that I can easily pick up and put down plus the bonus of being cool on my lap… I began my Claudia Scarf by Rebecca Jackson late last year but it was sadly neglected during the silly season. It seems that this has been a common theme for Lauren, Kim and Anita as well – as they’ve been working on scarves during the holiday break! I thought it would be nice to share some scarf ideas with you. We would love you to join along with a relaxed summer scarf Knit / Crochet A Long! Namaste have brought out a new product in the past few months – Skinny Mini! The Skinny Mini is the perfect accessory for storing your double pointed needles, crochet hooks and other notions. The case expands open, so you can easily find everything, and comes in six co-ordinated colours so you can mix and match with the other items in the Namaste range. We also have more stock of the ever popular Buddy Cases, Circular Cases and Mini Cozies for all your notion and needle storage needs. Our Namaste range has been a popular holiday purchase and has been disappearing fast. We have another order full of goodness on its way!
Interweave Spin Off Winter 2011
Just arrived – Interweave Spin Off Winter 2011 In this issue, we’re looking at fibre close-up by examining crimp and diameter in detail to understand why fibre does what it does. Beth Smith has written a great article about spinning to the crimp, Deb Robson has written a really fascinating article about fibre diameter and Judith MacKenzie examines the difference between hair and fibre with her wonderful ability to ask big questions and then answer them in lyrical ways. Our fibre basic focus is on yaks. And our developing your skills department takes a look at purchasing and sorting a fleece. This issue also includes our largest ever special pull out Natural Fibre Directory full of suppliers and mills from across the United States and around the world.
Interweave Crochet Winter 2011
New in-store – Interweave Crochet Winter 2011 Who says lace is just for summer? In this issue, we explore lace for winter with several big, bold winter lace designs and a handful of fine lace designs, to add a light touch of lace to your burly winter garb. And socks! We have three ways to make socks, including fabulous Pamir slip-stitch socks. Maire Treanor’s series on Clones lace continues with two shamrock designs. Add some jackets and vests, as well as a blanket, and it all adds up to 22 projects to cheer you through winter. A preview of patterns -
Classes
With a new year comes a fresh start to our classes! One of our new classes this year focuses on cast on / cast off techniques. Different techniques will yield different results, and this class will show you a few of the most used methods and the reasons why we use them. This class is aimed at knitters who want to go beyond the basics, or would like to expand past the one or two techniques they know. Cast on/off Techniques Thursday 6-8pm 19^th January $25.00 Please bring 4mm knitting needles, 4mm crochet hook and a smooth yarn as you will be using this yarn for the different techniques. We also have a new series of Learn to Knit classes beginning on Saturdays in January. This is the perfect time of year to learn how to knit, so you are all ready for the cooler months. The three lessons will cover how to cast on, knit, purl and cast off and are the ideal class for the beginner knitter. Learn to Knit Saturday 1-3pm 14^th, 21^st & 28^th January $25 per lesson We received some fabulous feedback at the end of last year about the classes you wanted to see on our calendar. We have two new classes launching in February – Learn to Lace and Japanese Crochet Symbols. Learn to Lace is a two lesson series which will find you creating a sample piece of lace in the first lesson, forming the foundation of the different stitches used in lace knitting. The second lesson will focus on any problems you’ve had over the week with your homework, and beginning your first shawl. Learn to Lace Sunday 12-2pm 5^th & 12^th February $60.00 When looking through crochet patterns, you may have found that some patterns use symbols and charts to display the pattern instead of being written out. The Japanese use this method for the majority of their patterns, but it is an international method. This class will show you how to decipher these charts and show you how easy it is to follow this format. Japanese Crochet Symbols Thursday 6-8pm 23^rd February $25.00 We also continue our very popular Technical Support classes on Tuesday afternoons, Thursday mornings and Saturday mornings, with other times sporadically through the weeks. On the Needles at Tangled Yarns
We have a bumper edition of What’s On The Needles this week! Full of some finished Christmas presents and some holiday break cast ons. I also managed to snap a few pictures of some of our customer’s projects during the Christmas/New Year break – some absolutely stunning stitches! The lovely Louise popped in to share a few finished baby blankets in our Cotton Fine (Granny Square & Summer Garden Granny Square by Attic24. They are simply the sweetest things I have seen and my fingers just itch to start one…. Amanda amazed us all and finished five, that’s right five!! Acacia’s by Georgie Hallam during December. They are a rainbow of delight in our Cascade Ultra Pima. We are lucky to have some modelled shots of Anita’s Very Cherry by Alana Dakos in our Cascade Ultra Pima (wine) for her young miss for Christmas! Anita also finished two massive Hogwarts Scarf(s) in Biggan Design DK (Sunflower & Crimson) for her two little ones for Christmas gifts. Her holiday knitting has been working on her Tidal in our Cascade Ultra Pima. After a little help from me Anita found some very special yarn under her tree from her wonderful husband….how could she not cast on Audrey in Unst in our Madelinetosh Pashmina (silver fox). Lauren had two Christmas presents in the works – one for her sister and one for her mother. She’s had to be a bit quiet on the one for her mother, as she is a dedicated reader of our newsletter!! Lauren made another Liesl for her sister in Cascade Ultra Pima (turquoise). This was such an economical knit with only needing one skein of the Ultra Pima for the 34″ size (which, seeing it was a thinner yarn than called for in the pattern, yielded around a 32″ size). She crocheted around the armholes to firm up the openings. A perfect pop of colour! Her other, secret project was a set of cushion covers based on theAfrican Flower motif for her mother in the Cascade Ultra Pima (magenta, periwinkle, lavender, armada and natural). These will look lovely on Lauren’s mother’s couch – the colours tie in beautifully with a Ripple Blanket her mother made in Cotton Fleece. There has also been a Summer Scarf cast on with the Horai Scarf by Fukatsu in Malabrigo Lace Merino Baby (Frank orche). Nice to be able to pick up and put down. Finished just in time for filling by Santa…. My girls adored their Christmas Stockings with Stripes by Erssie I used one ball each ofBiggan Design DK Merino in 080 – White, 290 – Bright Orange, 405 – Lime & 955 – Hot Pink. I made a last minute decision on the Saturday a week before Christmas that I would make a little cardi for each of my little ones to wear on Christmas day. Of course my pattern choice was the super sweet Jane by Georgie Hallam! I used super popular Cascade Ultra Pima in Pink Sapphire (3702) for miss 6 and Periwinkle (3726) for miss 3. Each cardi took under two skeins and were cast off on Christmas eve….talk about cutting it fine! Some easy holiday knitting – again in our Cascade Ultra Pima, a Cable Braided Necklace by Olga Buraya-Kefelian. These were an ideal last minute gift and we saw many of our customers whipping them up in no time, including our wonderful Suz who managed to make four while she was back home in Brisbane on holidays. My first real finished project for 2012 is my Adrift by Carol Feller. I am totally in love with this cardi! I will admit that the endless stocking stitch was a hard slog but the finished project is so worth it.

WIP Wednesday 04.01.12

I welcomed in 2012 with a few wonderful lazy days off with my little pixies, hanging at home in our PJ’s, building sandcastles at the beach and playing lego!

I also spent some time re-acquainting myself with my works in progress…

My WIP basket(s) were emptied and some hard decisions were made – there was some ripping but mostly I decided to push on with the projects.

One in particular that I have picked up again this week is my Claudia Scarf by Rebecca Jackson in our Pierrot Yarns Beauty Cotton Silk, simply bliss to work with in the summer heat!

I have a deadline with this scarf, my mums birthday is later this month. I have also made the decision to finish something else that has been on my needles for while…hopefully she will cherish them both.

2011 Wrap Up

I love this time of year, the silly season has passed and it seems like the whole world has slowed down.

There is a little extra time to take a step back and breath.

I am enjoying the extra time at home in the morning with my little ones, the relaxed breakfasts and playtime.

I also find that around this time of year I have the urge to re-visit my projects both finished and works in progress….

On the Needles at Tangled Yarns
Projects are flying off the needles this week at Tangled Yarns! Much of our knitting and crochet at the moment is secret gift knitting so we can’t share them with you just yet…… There has also been a lot of last minute casting on….we are all hoping to avoid the Christmas Eve Cast-off! My mum has been working away on some tiny scarfs for our family of reindeers that grace our front window. Each reindeer will have a different scarf, all made from Biggan Design DK Merino. Earlier this week my 6yr old was in-store helping out while on school holidays and she was delighted when she was allowed to paint Rudolph’s nose red! Lauren is partially through another Liesl by Ysolda Teague in our Cascade Ultra Pima (3733 – Turquoise), this time for her sister. After a false start when she first cast on, she’s well on her way to having it wrapped up and under the tree for Christmas. After a ripping session last Saturday morning I cast on a second time with my Cascade Ultra Pima (3763 – Waterlily). This time I am working on Summer Waves Cardi by Vera Sanon. I have separated for the sleeves and have a few good inches of straight knitting to go now before picking up for the lovely lace. This and my other projects will have to wait as I have some serious Christmas knitting to whip up! Nothing like casting on 10 days before Christmas… On Wednesday night I quickly cast on the first of two stockings for the end of my girls beds. The pattern that I am using is Christmas Stocking with Stripes by Erssie Major. The yarn is a cheery selection of our Biggan Design DK Merino. One down and one to go!! (080 – White, 290 – Bright Orange, 405 – Lime & 955 – Hot Pink)

Last Minute Shopping
We will be posting parcels right through the Christmas & New Year period. As we post parcels all across Australia, it is best to check with Australia Post’s website to see when your parcel will arrive using their postage calculator (our postcode is 4006). We pride ourselves with a quick turnaround in our online and phone orders and 99% of the time we are able to ship the same day you order. It is a busy time of the year for the postal service however, so we do recommend you use Express Post to ensure the best chance of arrival before Christmas. Our gift vouchers can be made to any value and we will be processing vouchers right up until 4pm Brisbane time on Christmas Eve!! Vouchers can be emailed to you if you do need a last minute gift. You can order these online but it would probably be best to phone the store on 07 3666 0276 to make sure we catch the transaction if it is coming up to closing time.
