25.05.12

What a grey & wet day we have in Brisbane today….

I was tempted to curl up on the lounge with my coffee and knitting – instead I decided to brighten things up by adding some colour to my day with our Friday Newsletter!

We just adore receiving the lovely feedback on our newsletter, it makes my week to know that you all enjoy Fridays as much as I do.

It has been a crazy week with stock deliveries, classes, customers and of course our Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea event!

Thank you to all who attended on Wednesday afternoon, I hope you had as much fun as we did.

Things were certainly made extra interesting with the visit from Chanel 10 News and the live cross to the shop!

Here are a few of my favourite shots from the evening, I will share more in a folder on our Facebook page shortly.

BrisStyle

Our local BrisStyle crew are hitting the road with their Craft Caravan projects with three events on during June!

tangledYARNS

Friday 1 June 10am – 4pm
King George Square, Brisbane

Saturday 2 June 11am – 5pm
Zillmere Multicultural Festival

Sunday 3 June 9am – 4pm
Racecourse Road Carnival

Pull up a deck chair, relax and put yourself in caravanning mode…suburban caravanning mode that is! Think two-toned retro caravans, community created bunting, neighbourhood engagement and most importantly hands-on craft and professional development advice delivered by local crafters (along with the odd pink flamingo thrown in for good measure).

The BrisStyle Craft Caravan is set to be a moveable oasis of crafting goodness, which will engage festivalgoer’s in the suburbs and inner city. The onsite retro caravan will evoke feelings of nostalgia as well as providing a fun and interactive backdrop for a friendly neighbourhood craft-up, appealing to all the family, young and old. Just like a craft holiday in your own backyard.

This event is significant because we are taking craft to the people, giving them the opportunity to ask ‘how to’ questions about their own craft.” says BrisStyle Market and Events Coordinator Helen Berthold.

So say hooroo to the crowds and escape on your own crafty retro adventure at the BrisStyle Craft Caravan’s “make and take” suburban oasis. Participants can drop in and craft the day away using holiday crafting skills from their schooldays. In particular, the June 1 King George Square event will come to life with the extra help of community yarn bombing.

Those wanting creative development advice can check in at Dr Craft’s Q&A caravan where local creative’s will be on hand to give advice on all your crafting maladies.

Highlights of the “make and take” workshops:

Caravan colouring-in Oasis: Use your own flair and imagination to colour in a variety of retro suburban caravanning items. All ages and colouring outside the lines welcome!

MYO Caravan Brooch or Magnet: Create your very own piece of wearable or magnetised nostalgia using your choice of crafting medium. Draw, glue or colour-in a cool quirky caravan shape to take away to your own suburban oasis. Ah the serenity!

Community Bunting Project: This project aims to engage and showcase the imagination and crafting talents of the local communities where the festivals are being held in the form of bunting.

If you can’t wait until June to get your BrisStyle fix head into the city this evening!

Indie Twilight Market
Friday 25
th May from 5pm!

tangledYARNS

As part of Italian Week, the markets will be swinging to the beat of Brass Roots Live performing a tribute to Frank Sinatra!

Once again you’ll find an amazing array of constantly evolving wares….all made here in Brisbane!
Friday’s market sees over 100 indie handmade specialists being showcased.

While you’re weaving your way through the stalls make sure you check out the BrisStyle Co-op located in the heart of the markets.

This Friday’s Co-op will certainly make for an exciting and vibrant handmade hub where you’ll find an eclectic line-up of our local emerging BrisStyle artisans in a boutique style setting.

Drop into the King George Square Groove Train for a bite to eat and a cold bevvy or over to the Coffee Hit for a hot toddy. There are also a plethora of great places to eat in the city as well as ATM’s just across the road.

Just perfect to make a night of it!

18.05.12

The temperature has certainly started to drop this week!

For me this always seems bring on a bad case of ‘Startitis’…
(a mad desire to cast on of many projects)

I have noticed that I am not the only one that has been struck – the shop has been a flurry of knitters & crocheters project planningand casting on left, right and centre.

Our classes and social groups have been full of our wonderful regulars expanding their skills plus lots of new faces.

We have finally had a little lull in our stock deliveres…our board is overflowing with orders that are in transit.

We have been joking that this is the ‘calm before the storm’!

It has been nice to have a little break from the bar-coding and it has allowed me to spend some time on the small things…

I added a little extra colour to our front window yesterday.

tangledYARNS

I have been looking at this chair for some time – I could just see it stacked high with our blankets – I simply adore it. The only problem now is that I can see at least one more, in a different colour joining this one soon.

Hope your weekend is full of colour!

SOAK

After almost selling out of our ever popular SOAK products we almost pounced on the delivery person this afternoon!

New stock of the 425ml bottles in Aquae, Citrus and Flora have hit the shelves and we have also added the smaller 130ml bottles. They are idea for popping in your suitcase when travelling.

tangledYARNS

Clover
Our granny blanket from last week seemed to hit a soft spot with many…between that and all of our new Learn To Crochet students we were wiped out of several sizes of our favourite Clover Soft Touch Crochet Hooks.

A new delivery has just arrived and we have full stock of all sizes.

tangledYARNS

Top ups of all of our Clover tools including stitch markers, darning needles and point protectors.

Whats on the Needles at Tangled Yarns
Cardigan fever seems to have arrived!

They are such a versatile garment and easy to layer on those days that you can’t decide if you are hot or cold.

The lovely Jodi popped in this morning to share two of her freshly finished knits.

Honeybee Cardigan by Laura Chau

tangledYARNS

tangledYARNS

This is such a sweet pattern and looked amazing over Jodi’s simple black dress.

Another stunning finished project – Hay Cardigan by Veera Valimaki

tangledYARNS

tangledYARNS

I am just a fan of Veera’s, her designs are always an enjoyable knit and the finished garments timeless in their style.

Kim is so close to finishing her second cardigan for the year!
(this year is her proclaimed ‘year of garments’)

With just the button bands to go is Emelie by Elin Berglund.

tangledYARNS

Kim has found this to be an enjoyable knit with enough interesting features to keep her interested. The lace panels in the front keep you motivate and there was a few great new techniques learn along the way, including the short row sleeve caps.

I can’t wait to see it finished!

Of course Kim has to break up the garment knitting with a little blanket knitting. This is the start of a beautiful Mitered Crosses Blanket by Kay Gardiner.

Kim is using several different colours of our Noro Silk Garden bordered by a neutral shade of Cascade 220 Worsted.

EtangledYARNS
tangledYARNS

Each square takes around half a ball of Noro, so it is a nice way to use Noro without it being too overwhelming.

As I mentioned earlier I have had a serious case of startitis this week….

My kitchen at home needs some new dishcloths and how could I resist with the stunning new range of colours in our Debbie Bliss Eco Aran.

I am making a stack of my go to crochet dishcloths – JustRight and BigTime Dishcloths by Deborah Ellis.

I live the simple textured pattern and I can get a large cloth from a single ball. I’m thinking seven new cloths, in seven different colours…one for each day of the week.

Now for the tricky part….deciding on the colours!

tangledYARNS

Next on my needles is a hat in our Debbie Bliss Luxury Tweed. This colour tempted me last winter but I couldn’t seem to put my finger on just the right pattern.

This time I think I have found it – Autumn in Garrison by Kate Gagnon Osborn. The little leaf pattern in the vivid green tweed is just knitting up just as I had hoped.

tangledYARNS

Last week I cast on Featherweight by Hannah Fettig in our new Eki Riva Alpaca Lace. I managed to make it almost to the sleeve separation when I suddenly decided that I wasn’t happy with the fabric.

The lace is so fine and light that I have ripped and gone down two needle sizes to a 3.5mm.

Second time around and I am much happier.

tangledYARNS

We love the wonderful customer feedback that we receive, it is amazing to hear how we inspire so many of you to pick up the needles and to cast on.

This week the reverse has happened.

Both Anita and I have been inspired to cast on by a lovely technical support student.

We are having a little mini KAL together! We both have daughters roughly the same age and could not resist casting on My Honey by Elena Nodel…

tangledYARNS

The yarn is our Cascade 220 Worsted so we may have to do some juggling to make it work but the almost musk lolly coloured pink was too good to go past.

Made by Megan

Planning a visit into the shop over the weekend?

We have this divine Banana Cake with Passionfruit Cream Cheese Icing to tempt your taste buds!

The second lesson will focus on any problems you’ve had over the week with your homework and possibly begin your first shawl.

Brown Sheep

As always our Brown Sheep Cotton Fleece is continuing to be a strong favourite right into the cooler weather.

Another delivery has arrived this afternoon!

tangledYARNS

With its blend of 80% Cotton / 20% Wool and the stunning range of colours it makes for a great blanket and throw yarn.

Cotton Fleece works up wonderful in both Knit or Crochet, Kim’s Vintage Missoni Inspired Chevron Blanket is so gorgeous and on 4.5mm needles the fabric is delightful.

And of course, one of my favourite Cotton Fleece projects would have to be my Babette Blanket that was started all the way back in 2009!

It was a long term project that had a couple of hibernations until finally finishing it in early 2011 but my little girls just love the finished blanket.

We have also experienced a seasonally unusual boom in our Brown Sheep Cotton Fine thanks to a little mini staff KAL.

I was after some stripe love and cast on Rayures by Amy Miller. Sadly I have been distracted by other pretty things and am yet to finish mine…whoops!

Our wonderful Derrin & Lauren have each whipped up an amazing version in our Cotton Fine!

Derrin has used – October Leaf, Putty, Spryte, Peridot, Banana, Lilac Haze & My Blue Heaven.

Lauren has used
– Putty, Cherry Moon, October Leaf, Sunflower Gold, Lime Light, Caribbean Sea & Majestic Orchid.

Kim has been keen to cast on since she first saw the pattern and decided to stick with a more subtle colour selection – Cotton Ball, Slate Charcoal, Deep Sea Fog, Spyrte, Rue, Putty and Terracotta Canyon.

We have 4 little kits of these colours made up and ready to go!

Rayures Kits

tangledYARNS

*Please note – these kits are for the yarn only.
You must purchase your own copy of the Rayures pattern directly from Ravelry.
We love the pattern and
are so taken by the soft colours in the original Rayures scarf that it has inspired us to put together a cotton blend version with the Brown Sheep Cotton Fine.

If subtle isn’t your style we are placing another order with Brown Sheep on Monday and we are happy to take custom orders!!

My mum has already put in her order and if I didn’t already have one on the needles I’d be tempted to come up with another colour range.

You can view the shade card in store or on the Brown Sheep website here.

Please email the store – tangled@tangledyarns.com.au or phone (07) 3666 0276 to place your order.

Tangled Yarns Tutorials

It has been some time since our last TY Tutorial!

Things have been so busy that we haven’t had time to whip any up but at this time of year we often get the question – ‘How much yarn do I need for a blanket’!

This can be a tricky question as many factors come into play, pattern, yarn, tension…

I thought I would share how I work out my yarn requirements for blankets.

For this example I am using the ‘How to Hexagon’ pattern by Lucy of Attic 24, our Biggan Design DK Merino and a 4.00mm crochet hook.

Firstly I need to establish how many hexagons I need. To do this I recommend measuring a blanket or throw that is approximately the right size – lets work with 100cm x 100cm.

Now that I know my blanket size I need to measure a single hexagon.

My finished hexagons are 10cm in width so for a 100cm x 100cm I will need 100 hexagons.

tangledYARNS

If you are planning on changing colours each round it is a good idea to work out how much yarn you need for each round.

The simplest way to do this is to crochet up a hexagon, changing colour each round and then pull it back out.

Biggan Design DK Merino has 105 meters per 50 gram ball or 10, 500cm.

Please keep in mind that this is with my tension, YOUR tension may work out with different calculations but this gives you a guide and my basic formula for working out requirements.

tangledYARNS

1st round (orange)
145cm
(approx 72 per 50g ball & minimum 2 balls round 1 colour)

tangledYARNS

2nd round (green)
245cm

Whats on the Needles at Tangled Yarns

Lauren finished her Rayures by Amy Miller earlier in April….ahhhh the dangers of working in the store over the weekend and a little enabling help from Derrin!

The colours of the Brown Sheep Cotton Fine are just stunning and so very Lauren. She has used the Putty as the constant base and worked her way through the rainbow.

An instant splash of colour to cheer up any grey day this winter.

Anita finished her Shellseeker by Heidi Kirrmaier in our Cascade Yarns Ultra Pimaand has been inspiring all of her Technical Support students by wearing it along to class!

tangledYARNS

Although it is now May, Derrin seems to still be on her accessories kick.

She is working on September Stole by Paula Ladd in our Malabrigo Lace…so light and delicate.

tangledYARNS

Also on the needles is A List of Things by Robyn Grauer in our Malabrigo Sock.

Derring has been using these socks as an example for her Learn To Knit Socks students.

(for those how are keen to get their hands on some more Malabrigo, we hope to hear very soon that our order is complete and ready for shipping!)

Just in time for the cool snap that started last week!

I must have known that it was coming as I cast off the evening before the first really cold day here in Brisbane.

This is my eldest ‘little miss’ in her Jane by Georgie Hallam.

I have used our Biggan Design DK Merino in Raspberry so I know that it will hold up to the wear and tear of being a school cardi.

Isn’t she just the cheekiest!

tangledYARNS

I have had a few cast ons this week, the temptation of all this new yarn simply made it impossible not to cast on.

The lure of Noro is always strong, the way the colour play out as you knit is irresistable.

Earlier in the week I cast on a simple Instant Gratification Scarf by Cyn with our Noro Taiyo and 8.0mm needles.

The Taiyo is so soft and light yet surprisingly warm.

Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea

Tangled Yarns would like to ask for your help in raising vital funds for the Cancer Council through Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea.

With your support, we can make this year the biggest yet!

We invite you to join us between 4pm & 6pm on Wednesday 23rd May with yarn, needles & hooks in hand to support those who have been affected by Cancer.

Some may think that knitting & crochet is a little ‘retro’ (although we all know better!) so we thought it only fitting to theme our event Retro-Tea!

We would love you to re-create a popular morning tea dish from a past era.
Bring along your plate to share on the day and go in the the draw for a fantastic surprise!

We are all about creating here at Tangled Yarns, so to share the handmade happiness we have decided to offer several giveaways for our Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea.

Many customers have commented during the past week on our latest finished tea cosy in store – The Official Biggest Morning Tea Daffodil Tea Cosy designed by the Tea Cosy Queen herself, Loani Prior.

The lovely Loani has given her blessing and my tea cosy will be one of them many items available as a giveaway pack for our ABMT!

tangledYARNS

Our Daffy has been worked up in Cascade 220, we will also have a giveaway pack that includes all the yarn required for making your very own Daffy!

If you have never knitted a tea cosy before there will be plenty of knitters in store during the afternoon who will be able to get you started.

Lavender by Georgie Hallam was designed especially as a chemo hat – beautiful warm yarn in a soft stitch keeping a sensitive scalp protected from the elements.

This giveaway pack will include yarn and the lovely Lavender pattern, donated by the gorgeous Georgie!

These giveaways are just the start of the excitement that we are planning….

We understand that not everyone can make it in store and we wanted to make our event open to everyone so you can all be part of our fundraising efforts.

Our ABMT giveaways are open to everyone no matter where you live (we will cover postage if required)!

To enter the giveaways, simply donate to our  Tangled Yarns ABMT page (or in-store).

For every $5.00 that you donate, you will receive one entry into the draw.

After you have donated online, please email a copy of your receipt to tangled@tangledyarns.com.au

Entries for the giveaways will close Wednesday 23rd May at 4:30pm, with the drawing to take place at 5:30pm.

Our donation page is open now and you can donate as many times as you like right up until the end of May.

Our goal is to reach $1000 and with your help, I’m sure we will make it!

Thanks for your support!

Knit A Long / Crochet A Long

Back by popular demand…

Our May Knit A Long / Crochet A Long is all about short rows – this seasons hottest design feature!

Short rows can make curves on straight edges or flat knitting, they can turn sock heels or toes or add shape to a garment to improve the fit.

This is accomplished by partially knitting an existing row, then turning the work and knitting back the other direction again.

There are a number of different methods of working short rows – basic short rows, wrap & turn short rows, yarn over short rows, Japanese short rows & shadow short rows.

We have some basic methods on the Tutorials page of our blog.

Some patterns that incorporate short rows into their design -

I am tempted to make one in several colours.

I did end up using just over a skein so I have almost a full ball that will become something lush for around my neck.

Over 35 patterns from all over the world, designed by master knitters, such as Vicki Square, Donna Druchunas, Sara Lamb, Galina A. Khmeleva, Nancy Bush, and many more.

Inspiring and informative companion stories that frame the projects with cultural and historical context, taking you to the heart of knitting.

Focuses on techniques ranging from Orenburg lace, optical illusion colorwork, vintage lace, textured stitches, traditional colorwork motifs, and many others that will help beginners learn and inspire even the most seasoned knitters.

Interweave Crochet Spring 2012

The latest Interweave Crochet hit the shelves this week.

Although this is for the opposite season many of the projects are perfect for our Australian Autumn.

Colourwork Workshop
with Biggan Dupps

Biggan Dups from Biggan Design is joining us in-store for a two day Colourwork Workshops!

The pattern featured this year is Color Me Pretty Hat
by Elana Nodel

From Elena

‘Color Me Pretty’ hat is my third design in the series of the bright and fun Fair Isle garments that I have been making for my daughter Maya.

The colorwork is simple enough for a beginner, yet interesting enough for a seasoned knitter as well. The hat is worked entirely in the round from the bottom up.

The Fair Isle design lends itself to many possibilities of various color combinations; my version is just one of them. You can work with as little as one contrast color or with as many as you would like.

SIZES:
Small (toddler) – 18-19″
Medium (child – teen) – 20-22″
Large (adult) – 21-23″

YARDAGE:
MC: 90, 110, 140 yards;
CC: 40, 50, 60 yards;

Over the two days, you will learn how to do stranded colourwork while creating a Color Me Pretty Hat.

Participants are to purchase the Color Me Pretty Hat directly from Elena via Ravelry prior to the workshop.

On the needles at Tangled Yarns

It was a very productive long weekend for many with projects being cast off and lots of new ones been cast on over the break.
Maureen popped in with the most adorable pair of Not-so-tiny Slippers by Ysolda Teague (from Whimsical Little Knits Book 3).tangledYARNS

She used a single skein of our new Cascade 128 Superwash Chunkyin colour 1964 and finished them off with some of our buttons.

tangledYARNS
Derrin finished a stunning Rayures Cowl by Amy Miller in a delightful range of colours of our Brown Sheep Cotton Fine.

tangledYARNS

Cotton Fine is not usually something we carry in large quantities over Winter but this is such a great project! We are re-stocking many of the Cotton Fine especially so you can create your own Rayures.

tangledYARNS

Seeing Derrins finished cowl has encouraged me to pick up my Cascade Heritage Silk version!

On a roll with her stripes Derrin also managed to whip up a pair of Peppermint Patties by Monica Clark.

tangledYARNS

The original pattern calls for worsted weight yarn knit at a gauge of 24 stitches to 10cm using 4.5mm needles but Derrin couldn’t achieve this with a nice fabric so she dropped to a sport weight yarn and 3.5mm needles.

The yarns used were our Cascade Eco Alpaca and Noro Silk Garden Sock.

Goes to show the importance of swatching for all projects!

The Wednesday evening before the long weekend I cast off and blocked my Colour Affection by Veera Valimaki.

tangledYARNS

Our Cascade Heritage Silk blocked beautifully and the finished shawl is a joy to wear!
tangledYARNS

Over the weekend I finished off my Noro Ripples Scarf (One Ball Ripple Scarf by Coats & Clark) in our Noro Silk Garden.

tangledYARNS

After seeing how cute Maureens
Maureen Not-so-tiny Slippers by Ysolda Teague (from Whimsical Little Knits Book 3) were I couldn’t resist making a pair of my own.
tangledYARNS
Such a quick knit in our new Cascade 128 Superwash Chunky one evening of knitting and finished off with some sweet heart buttons.

tangledYARNS

With a couple of finished projects off my needles and all of the new yarn in store new projects were bound to happen…

I cast on Shawl Hill by Alicia Plummer  and Quick Cable Slouch Hat by Azure with our new Cascade Baby Alpaca Chunky.

tangledYARNS

tangledYARNS

After gifting the finished project I can reveal the sneaky project that I mentioned last week….

This is Glory by Lisa Gutierrez in our Cascade Eco Wool.

tangledYARNS

I was after something to make as a house warming gift for our wonderful Alice and her family and couldn’t go past the chunky lace in the Eco Wool.

tangledYARNS

tangledYARNS

It was so much fun to make that I have started another of Lisas patterns, Anya.

This time I am using our new Cascade 128 Superwash Chunky, can’t wait to snuggle under it on the lounge!

It was wonderful to watch as the students picked up so many new techniques from the amazing Biggan Dups.

tangledYARNS

We have one more Colourwork Workshop scheduled before Biggan heads off to the UK!

Knit / Crochet A Long

This week is the first week of the school holidays in Queensland so I have had a little helper here at the shop with me.

My Miss 6 is a budding knitter and has had enough of knitting scarves. She was keen to move onto something new so we sat down and browsed through Ravelry together.

tangledYARNS

Finally we settled on a pair of leg warmers! This first pair will be for her but watch out family, she intends to knit a pair for all of us!

If you are not ready to embark of knitting a pair of socks with us for our Knit A Long / Crochet A Long this month, perhaps try a pair of leg warmers or a pair of snuggly slippers.
