What a grey & wet day we have in Brisbane today…. I was tempted to curl up on the lounge with my coffee and knitting – instead I decided to brighten things up by adding some colour to my day with our Friday Newsletter! We just adore receiving the lovely feedback on our newsletter, it makes my week to know that you all enjoy Fridays as much as I do. It has been a crazy week with stock deliveries, classes, customers and of course our Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea event! Thank you to all who attended on Wednesday afternoon, I hope you had as much fun as we did. Things were certainly made extra interesting with the visit from Chanel 10 News and the live cross to the shop! Here are a few of my favourite shots from the evening, I will share more in a folder on our Facebook page shortly. Our lucky prize winners are…..

| BrisStyle | |

Our local BrisStyle crew are hitting the road with their Craft Caravan projects with three events on during June! Friday 1 June 10am – 4pm Saturday 2 June 11am – 5pm Sunday 3 June 9am – 4pm Pull up a deck chair, relax and put yourself in caravanning mode…suburban caravanning mode that is! Think two-toned retro caravans, community created bunting, neighbourhood engagement and most importantly hands-on craft and professional development advice delivered by local crafters (along with the odd pink flamingo thrown in for good measure). The BrisStyle Craft Caravan is set to be a moveable oasis of crafting goodness, which will engage festivalgoer’s in the suburbs and inner city. The onsite retro caravan will evoke feelings of nostalgia as well as providing a fun and interactive backdrop for a friendly neighbourhood craft-up, appealing to all the family, young and old. Just like a craft holiday in your own backyard. “This event is significant because we are taking craft to the people, giving them the opportunity to ask ‘how to’ questions about their own craft.” says BrisStyle Market and Events Coordinator Helen Berthold. So say hooroo to the crowds and escape on your own crafty retro adventure at the BrisStyle Craft Caravan’s “make and take” suburban oasis. Participants can drop in and craft the day away using holiday crafting skills from their schooldays. In particular, the June 1 King George Square event will come to life with the extra help of community yarn bombing. Those wanting creative development advice can check in at Dr Craft’s Q&A caravan where local creative’s will be on hand to give advice on all your crafting maladies. Highlights of the “make and take” workshops:
If you can’t wait until June to get your BrisStyle fix head into the city this evening! Indie Twilight Market
Once again you’ll find an amazing array of constantly evolving wares….all made here in Brisbane! While you’re weaving your way through the stalls make sure you check out the BrisStyle Co-op located in the heart of the markets. This Friday’s Co-op will certainly make for an exciting and vibrant handmade hub where you’ll find an eclectic line-up of our local emerging BrisStyle artisans in a boutique style setting. Drop into the King George Square Groove Train for a bite to eat and a cold bevvy or over to the Coffee Hit for a hot toddy. There are also a plethora of great places to eat in the city as well as ATM’s just across the road. Just perfect to make a night of it! |

The temperature has certainly started to drop this week! For me this always seems bring on a bad case of ‘Startitis’… I have noticed that I am not the only one that has been struck – the shop has been a flurry of knitters & crocheters project planningand casting on left, right and centre. Our classes and social groups have been full of our wonderful regulars expanding their skills plus lots of new faces. We have finally had a little lull in our stock deliveres…our board is overflowing with orders that are in transit. We have been joking that this is the ‘calm before the storm’! It has been nice to have a little break from the bar-coding and it has allowed me to spend some time on the small things… I added a little extra colour to our front window yesterday.
Hope your weekend is full of colour!

Our granny blanket from last week seemed to hit a soft spot with many…between that and all of our new Learn To Crochet students we were wiped out of several sizes of our favourite Clover Soft Touch Crochet Hooks.
A new delivery has just arrived and we have full stock of all sizes.

Cardigan fever seems to have arrived!
They are such a versatile garment and easy to layer on those days that you can’t decide if you are hot or cold. The lovely Jodi popped in this morning to share two of her freshly finished knits. Honeybee Cardigan by Laura Chau
Another stunning finished project – Hay Cardigan by Veera Valimaki
Kim is so close to finishing her second cardigan for the year! With just the button bands to go is Emelie by Elin Berglund.
I can’t wait to see it finished!
Of course Kim has to break up the garment knitting with a little blanket knitting. This is the start of a beautiful Mitered Crosses Blanket by Kay Gardiner.
Kim is using several different colours of our Noro Silk Garden bordered by a neutral shade of Cascade 220 Worsted. E ![]() ![]() Each square takes around half a ball of Noro, so it is a nice way to use Noro without it being too overwhelming. As I mentioned earlier I have had a serious case of startitis this week…. My kitchen at home needs some new dishcloths and how could I resist with the stunning new range of colours in our Debbie Bliss Eco Aran. I am making a stack of my go to crochet dishcloths – JustRight and BigTime Dishcloths by Deborah Ellis. I live the simple textured pattern and I can get a large cloth from a single ball. I’m thinking seven new cloths, in seven different colours…one for each day of the week. Now for the tricky part….deciding on the colours!
Next on my needles is a hat in our Debbie Bliss Luxury Tweed. This colour tempted me last winter but I couldn’t seem to put my finger on just the right pattern. This time I think I have found it – Autumn in Garrison by Kate Gagnon Osborn. The little leaf pattern in the vivid green tweed is just knitting up just as I had hoped.
Last week I cast on Featherweight by Hannah Fettig in our new Eki Riva Alpaca Lace. I managed to make it almost to the sleeve separation when I suddenly decided that I wasn’t happy with the fabric. The lace is so fine and light that I have ripped and gone down two needle sizes to a 3.5mm. Second time around and I am much happier.
This week the reverse has happened. Both Anita and I have been inspired to cast on by a lovely technical support student. We are having a little mini KAL together! We both have daughters roughly the same age and could not resist casting on My Honey by Elena Nodel…

Our wall of Noro colour has certainly caused a stir…many customers have been making a beeline to the back wall the second they walk through our doors! We have added a small top up of the most popular weights and added the pure wool Kureyon. With all the luscious colours of Noro in store I couldn’t help start another Granny Square Blanket. This time I have used nine different colours of Noro Taiyo and have slipped stitched them together in the final round without a solid joining colour. The finished size is perfect size to snuggle under on the lounge.
With the arrival of the new Eki Riva Alpaca Lace I knew that I had to cast on another Featherweight by Hannah Fettig. It is the ultimate, easy to wear cardi and in the Alpaca Lace it is insanely soft!

| Brown Sheep |

|
As always our Brown Sheep Cotton Fleece is continuing to be a strong favourite right into the cooler weather. Another delivery has arrived this afternoon! Cotton Fleece works up wonderful in both Knit or Crochet, Kim’s Vintage Missoni Inspired Chevron Blanket is so gorgeous and on 4.5mm needles the fabric is delightful. It was a long term project that had a couple of hibernations until finally finishing it in early 2011 but my little girls just love the finished blanket. Hudson Bay Inspired Crib Blanket by Purl Soho Moderne Baby Blanket by Kay Gardiner and Anne Shayne OpArt by Melissa Dominguez Super Easy Baby Blanket by Purl Soho Neat Ripple Pattern by Lucy of Attic24 We have also experienced a seasonally unusual boom in our Brown Sheep Cotton Fine thanks to a little mini staff KAL. I was after some stripe love and cast on Rayures by Amy Miller. Sadly I have been distracted by other pretty things and am yet to finish mine…whoops! Our wonderful Derrin & Lauren have each whipped up an amazing version in our Cotton Fine! Derrin has used – October Leaf, Putty, Spryte, Peridot, Banana, Lilac Haze & My Blue Heaven.
We have 4 little kits of these colours made up and ready to go!
If subtle isn’t your style we are placing another order with Brown Sheep on Monday and we are happy to take custom orders!! My mum has already put in her order and if I didn’t already have one on the needles I’d be tempted to come up with another colour range. You can view the shade card in store or on the Brown Sheep website here. Please email the store – tangled@tangledyarns.com.au or phone (07) 3666 0276 to place your order.

| Tangled Yarns Tutorials |
|
|
It has been some time since our last TY Tutorial! Things have been so busy that we haven’t had time to whip any up but at this time of year we often get the question – ‘How much yarn do I need for a blanket’!
I thought I would share how I work out my yarn requirements for blankets. For this example I am using the ‘How to Hexagon’ pattern by Lucy of Attic 24, our Biggan Design DK Merino and a 4.00mm crochet hook. Firstly I need to establish how many hexagons I need. To do this I recommend measuring a blanket or throw that is approximately the right size – lets work with 100cm x 100cm. Now that I know my blanket size I need to measure a single hexagon. My finished hexagons are 10cm in width so for a 100cm x 100cm I will need 100 hexagons.
The simplest way to do this is to crochet up a hexagon, changing colour each round and then pull it back out. Biggan Design DK Merino has 105 meters per 50 gram ball or 10, 500cm. Please keep in mind that this is with my tension, YOUR tension may work out with different calculations but this gives you a guide and my basic formula for working out requirements. 1st round (orange) 2nd round (green) 3rd round (yellow) 4th & 5th round (grey) You will need to add extra balls of the round 4/5 colour to ‘join as you go’ or to seam you hexagons together and to border your blanket. These measurements include 10cm tails to begin and end each round.
We hope that this tutorial gives you the confidence to create your own blanket! |

If you missed out you can catch our next Ravelry Technical Class later this month. Ravelry / Technical Class
During a two hour lesson we will cover how to utilise the Advanced Search system, the wealth of knowledge in the project pages and discussion boards. $25.00 per person (1 x 2 hour class) Requirements- Yourself and a Ravelry account! If you have been inspired by the amazing range of crochet blankets and throws available perhaps our next round of Learn to Crochet courses is just what you need. This month we also have several more advanced classes on offer…. Fit Your Knits This class is an intermediate class designed to take your knitting to new levels. Saturday 12th May
Requirements – Please note that this is an intermediate course. Basic knitting experience is required. In the Round Knitting seamlessly in the round is essential for this seasons hottest knitwear items – hats, cowls and of course socks! During our Knitting In the Round course you will learn how to effortlessly join to knit in the round. We also touch on the various different methods of knitting in the round, circular needles, magic loop and double point needles. We suggest a small project to get you used to the technique. We can supply you with two patterns or if you have a simple hat pattern that is knitted in the round, you are welcome to bring that a long too. Fetchingby Cheryl Niamath is a pair of simple fingerless gloves with a basic cable detail. This takes just one ball of Debbie Bliss Cashmerino Aran(or something of a similar weight), 4mm double pointed needles, split ring marker, cable needle, darning needle and a piece of smooth waste yarn in a contrasting colour (approx 30cm long). Derrin’s Basic Hot Water Bottle cover will keep your hot water bottle toasty warm in the cooler months and would make a great gift too! This uses 150-200 metres of aran or bulky weight yarn and 6mm 40cm circulars OR 2 x 60cm circulars OR double pointed needles. You will also need a stitch marker OR split ring marker (depending on knitting method) and a darning needle. Requirements – Please note that this is an intermediate course. Prior knowledge of how to cast on, knit, purl and cast off is required.

| Whats on the Needles at Tangled Yarns | |
|
Lauren finished her Rayures by Amy Miller earlier in April….ahhhh the dangers of working in the store over the weekend and a little enabling help from Derrin! The colours of the Brown Sheep Cotton Fine are just stunning and so very Lauren. She has used the Putty as the constant base and worked her way through the rainbow. An instant splash of colour to cheer up any grey day this winter. ![]() Anita finished her Shellseeker by Heidi Kirrmaier in our Cascade Yarns Ultra Pimaand has been inspiring all of her Technical Support students by wearing it along to class! Although it is now May, Derrin seems to still be on her accessories kick.
She is working on September Stole by Paula Ladd in our Malabrigo Lace…so light and delicate.
Just in time for the cool snap that started last week! I must have known that it was coming as I cast off the evening before the first really cold day here in Brisbane.
I have used our Biggan Design DK Merino in Raspberry so I know that it will hold up to the wear and tear of being a school cardi. Isn’t she just the cheekiest!
Earlier in the week I cast on a simple Instant Gratification Scarf by Cyn with our Noro Taiyo and 8.0mm needles. The Taiyo is so soft and light yet surprisingly warm.

| Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea |
|
|
Tangled Yarns would like to ask for your help in raising vital funds for the Cancer Council through Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea. With your support, we can make this year the biggest yet! We invite you to join us between 4pm & 6pm on Wednesday 23rd May with yarn, needles & hooks in hand to support those who have been affected by Cancer. Some may think that knitting & crochet is a little ‘retro’ (although we all know better!) so we thought it only fitting to theme our event Retro-Tea! We would love you to re-create a popular morning tea dish from a past era. We are all about creating here at Tangled Yarns, so to share the handmade happiness we have decided to offer several giveaways for our Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea. Many customers have commented during the past week on our latest finished tea cosy in store – The Official Biggest Morning Tea Daffodil Tea Cosy designed by the Tea Cosy Queen herself, Loani Prior. The lovely Loani has given her blessing and my tea cosy will be one of them many items available as a giveaway pack for our ABMT!
If you have never knitted a tea cosy before there will be plenty of knitters in store during the afternoon who will be able to get you started. For every $5.00 that you donate, you will receive one entry into the draw.

| Knit A Long / Crochet A Long | |
|
Back by popular demand… Our May Knit A Long / Crochet A Long is all about short rows – this seasons hottest design feature! Short rows can make curves on straight edges or flat knitting, they can turn sock heels or toes or add shape to a garment to improve the fit. This is accomplished by partially knitting an existing row, then turning the work and knitting back the other direction again. There are a number of different methods of working short rows – basic short rows, wrap & turn short rows, yarn over short rows, Japanese short rows & shadow short rows. We have some basic methods on the Tutorials page of our blog.

This week has disappeared in the click of the needles! Last Sunday we were excited to be featured in a Courier Mail article. We love that this article has managed to reach such a wide range of knitters and we have been over whelmed by the wonderful feedback. It has been a pleasure to meet so many new knitters, both those inspired to pick up the needles for the first time and those coming back to knitting after a break. Our free Simple Slouchy Beanie pattern has now been loaded up onto Ravelry and is also available in store. This is a great pattern to learn knitting in the round plus some basic increase and decrease techniques. With a Bulky weight yarn and 6mm needles you will be able to whip up a hat to keep yourself warm this weekend. |

We have had yet another stunning blanket made by one of our wonderful customers pop back in-store for a little show & share! This is a Sunny Spread by Ellen Gormley in our Noro Silk Garden Lite and Biggan Design DK Merino.
Some soothing stripes for Autumn mornings…Shellseeker by Heidi Kirrmaier in our Cascade Yarns Ultra Pima.
Unable to resist casting on with out new Cascade Yarns Baby Alpaca Chunky when it arrived, Anita cast on Mustard Scarf by Jane Richmond.
This time simple Missoni stripes with out the chevron, of course in Kims favourite blanket yarn – our Brown Sheep Cotton Fleece.
Derrin is having an Accessories April! First off the needles was a Cambrian Cowl by Alana Dakos in our Cascade Yarns 128 Superwash Chunky.
I have been almost unable to knit with anything other than our new Cascade Yarns Baby Alpaca Chunky…. After forgetting to take my Quick Cable Slouch Hat by Azure home on Friday night last week I finished it off over the weekend. Super warm and squishy!
I did end up using just over a skein so I have almost a full ball that will become something lush for around my neck. Perhaps next time I would cut one row out of each cable to squeeze it in with the single skein. Also off the needles this week is my Shaw Hill by Alicia Plummer.

I hope to get some time to work on a few of my projects over the Easter break, I have a couple of secret projects that I have on the go, hopefully I will be able to reveal them soon. After seeing my finished cardi back in January I know many of you have been eagerly waiting for Miss Jane by Georgie Hallam to be released. Just in time for a holiday cast on Georgie released the pattern earlier this week! I am tempted to cast on a second Miss Jane, this time in wool for winter. Hoping you have a wonderful holiday break

AHeather Hoodie Vest by Debbie O’Neill in Cascade Eco Wool. Love all those cables! My mum has a new project on the go, her first time cabling. This is a four stitch cabled scarf in our Jo Sharp Alpaca Silk Georgette. This week our wonderful Kim had a birthday and I surprised her with some sneaky knitting that I had been working on last week. This is a Zuzu Petals by Carina Spencer in our MadelineTosh Pashmina! With the days cooling down I thought I had better cast on miss 6′s school cardi. I gave her the choice of several patterns and she picked the lovelyJane by Georgie Hallam. I am using our Biggan Design DK Merino.
Especially after seeing the wonderful finished project in our Ravelry group. Chrissy recently finished a lovely Taiyo version of the One-Ball Ripple Scarf by Coasts & Clark (crochet).
After a little nudging by a few Tech Support students and a certain TS Teacher I caved and last night I cast on Colour Affection by Veera Valimaki in our Cascade Heritage Silk.
They know me too well….. |
